So my new experience on Day 2 of New November: A Mock Code. As part of our Basic Life Support (BLS) course, we were required to participate in a mock code situation. After perfecting my CPR skills on a manikin for about an hour, we entered through the doors of what used to be an operating room. The simulated patient lying on the table was breathing and had a pulse when we first walked in. The EKG hooked up to the patient was steady. Suddenly, the patient stopped breathing and we had to put our BLS skills to use! One of us ordered instructions, another started CPR while another person got the AED ready, and I readied the breathing bag. We were a little shaky, but in the end the patient recovered--so over all we were successful! It was a great reminder that the ultimate goal of med school is to gain the knowledge that will help us to save lives in the future. We are on our way!
Another new piece of information that I'm sure all you bloggers have been wondering about.
"Why are yawns contagious?"
- -Contagious yawning gets at the ancient, deep, and subconscious roots of empathy and social bonding.
- -Yawns become contagious around age four.
- -Kids with autism are less likely to catch yawns than other kids. The more severe their condition, the less common the behavior gets.
